Cavaliers’ strong second half propels them to their second shutout of the season
The Montclair Cavaliers recorded their second shutout of the season, defeating the John Burroughs Bears 17-0 in Burroughs’ home opener. In their Week Zero matchups, Montclair defeated Indian Springs 37-0, while Burroughs suffered a 45-29 loss to South Torrance.
Jayden Bacerra opened the scoring for Montclair by converting a 31-yard field goal to give the Cavaliers a 3-0 lead. His field goal proved to be the only score by either team in the first half. Sho Fujita provided one of Burroughs’ offensive highlights in the opening quarter, breaking free for a 41-yard run that helped the Bears convert on third down. The Cavaliers held their three-point advantage through the end of the first quarter.
Neither team scored during a defensive second quarter, sending Montclair into halftime with a 3-0 lead. Ray Ramirez extended the Cavaliers’ advantage in the third quarter with a 48-yard touchdown run—the first touchdown of the game. Montclair entered the fourth quarter leading 10-0.
Abraham Gill put the game away with a goal-line touchdown run, increasing the Cavaliers’ lead to 17-0. Montclair’s defense kept the Bears off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game to secure its second consecutive shutout.
“I thought our defense played well throughout the night. Allowing 17 points is nothing since any offense can score that many points,” Burroughs coach Jose Calzadilla said. “I also don’t think our offense came ready to play. Calzadilla added that he blamed himself for not having the Bears’ offense and offensive line prepared to play.
Burroughs falls to 0-2, while Montclair improves to 2-0. Both teams will return to action Friday, Sept. 4. Burroughs will travel to Santa Monica, while Montclair will host Covina. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
