Lila Cabral’s net serve helps propel the Bulldogs to a sweeping victory over the Mustangs
The Burbank High girls’ volleyball team celebrated Senior Night with a three-set victory over the Muir Mustangs. The Bulldogs entered the match after opening Crest League play with a three-set sweep of Glendale. Muir was also coming off its league opener, a loss to crosstown rival Pasadena.
Before the match, Burbank honored four seniors from its varsity volleyball team: team captain Madi Yosh, Frankie Kim, Lana Kang and Gabi Ilasco. The players were recognized alongside their families during a special Senior Night ceremony.

Muir’s lone senior, Mirelle Franklin Sanchez, was also recognized following the national anthem. She received flowers and gifts from the Burbank High girls’ volleyball program.“It was a beautiful Senior Night ceremony for our four seniors,” Burbank coach Sabrina Sullivan said. “I haven’t known them for very long, but all four of them have made such a positive impact on the program during their four years playing volleyball at Burbank High School.”

Sullivan added that all four seniors lead by example and have also earned outstanding grades in the classroom. It’s an experience that I’ll never forget, and I will remember it for the rest of my life,” Yosh said. The team captain added that she will miss playing alongside her younger sister, Sam, next season.

Once play began, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early 3-0 lead behind points from Emerson Chong and Kang. The teams remained close throughout the opening set before Burbank pulled away for a 25-20 victory, sealing the set on an ace by Kim.

Burbank carried that momentum into the second set, scoring the first four points behind contributions from Chong and Farryn Hall. The Bulldogs maintained control and won the set, 25-16. Muir responded by opening the third set with a 5-2 run in an effort to extend the match. Burbank soon regained control, with Cabral’s serving helping the Bulldogs build momentum and complete the sweep with a 25-19 victory.

With the win, Burbank improved to 8-8-3 overall and remained unbeaten in Crest League play at 2-0. Muir fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in league competition. Both teams return to action Thursday, Sept. 17. Burbank will host Hoover at 3:45 p.m., while Muir will face Glendale at Glendale High School at 4 p.m.
