Bulldogs seek another 20-win season and a postseason breakthrough in 2026–27

Coming off consecutive 21-win seasons, the Burbank High School boys basketball team enters the 2026–27 campaign determined to continue its winning ways and advance beyond the opening round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

Last season, Burbank finished 21–8 overall and 9–5 in Pacific League play, earning another appearance in the CIF Southern Section Division 2A playoffs. However, the Bulldogs suffered a first-round exit for the second consecutive year, falling 65–39 to Westlake after losing to Hemet in the previous postseason.

The Bulldogs begin their fourth season under head coach Steve Eshleman with a new league schedule ahead. Burbank will compete in the Arroyo League alongside Arcadia, Crescenta Valley, La Cañada and Pasadena as part of the revamped Rio Pacific Conference.

Eshleman’s coaching staff includes assistants Tighe Eshleman, Ray Wantaga, Michael Lance and George Pentaris.“Our expectations haven’t changed since the change to the new format of the Rio Pacific League, but the league we’re in is hard, but there is hope entering the new season,” Eshleman said.

Eshleman also said Jon Ong is adjusting well to playing without his older brother and is expected to serve as the Bulldogs’ floor general on offense.

Senior guard/forward Kaleb Walker, who earned All-Pacific League honorable mention recognition last season, headlines Burbank’s returning group. Fellow seniors Jon Ong, Imani Young Smith and Avo Papikyan will also be players to watch as the Bulldogs pursue another 20-win season and a deeper playoff run.

Burbank opens the season at home against Vaughn on Friday, November 20, at 5:30 p.m. The Bulldogs begin Arroyo League play against Arcadia on Tuesday, January 5, at 7 p.m.

The Class of 2027 will be honored during Senior Night on Monday, January 25, when Burbank hosts crosstown rival Burroughs. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Follow the Rio Pacific Gazette throughout the season for coverage of Burbank Bulldogs boys basketball.
